There once was a tiny, blonde tomboy who ran barefoot across the grounds of Brackenhurst Hotel & Conference Center in Limuru, Kenya. She greeted guests — anticipating at least one known or future friend among the attendees. She hiked the forest in search of colobus monkeys or the glimpse of an elusive leopard. Other children her age brought home flowers or frogs as a gift for mom. She arrived each evening with loose porcupine quills or chameleons. Here she led many newly arrived American kids through the ins and outs of life in East Africa. Stay out of safari ants. Enjoy teatime. That sound in the night is a bushbaby and it won’t eat you. Hakuna matata! Most importantly, she learned from observation, and eventually practice, what it takes to succeed in managing successful events of varying sizes with wildly diverse and international attendees.

Brackenhurst and I have both changed much over the years, but the excellence of their staff sticks with me to this day. I believe superior customer service is the key ingredient to all industries — not hospitality alone. Because I was immersed in the finest hospitality and tourism around the world at a very young age, I approach every project like a five-star resort concierge: I will get it done. Through stepping into multi-faceted projects at the right place and time, I have fostered my own unique set of skills and core values. Natural curiosity has driven me to be a lifelong student and I love to learn new technologies and innovative ways of solving problems.

What I love most about my work is meeting new people, forming new relationships, and sharing viewpoints. I have a global perspective from my upbringing in East Africa which is vital in our rapidly evolving society. My time in a diverse, multicultural community gave me valuable soft skills often difficult for a person of single culture to adopt: deep cultural intelligence, adaptivity to change, sensitivity to diversity and inclusion, and an insatiable curiosity for problem solving.

I am more than an event manager. I’m an event concierge who won’t lose sight of your big picture while keeping track of all the little details. I am a full-spectrum project manager for events in the Statehouse Convention Center, Robinson Center, and River Market. Beginning with conducting site visits as you select the perfect venue and ending with the moment you kick up your feet after a successful event, I am there for you.

Together, we outline the details of the contract and communicate frequently to keep the event planning process smooth and on budget. I am the single point of contact for all your staff, vendors, exhibitors, and third-party contractors. Because I know your event from front to back, I will be present as facility manager to quickly respond to on-site needs. In case of emergencies we hope never happen, I am CPR/First Aid/AED certified as well as your liaison with local emergency services.

ANNUAL FUND & SPECIAL EVENTS COORDINATOR | STAFF SENATE PRESIDENT

Henderson State University | 2012-2018

Serving in the Development and Alumni arm of Henderson State’s Division of University Advancement was a fun and intellectual challenge. They needed more than an event planner. They needed someone who could become an in-depth project fundraiser for the annual fund as well. I began my higher education career as an assistant, but quickly moved into this newly created role. Not one to back down from a challenge, I overhauled and updated a comprehensive annual fund plan which resulted in a 28% increase of giving to the fund in my first year.

Small offices require big teamwork. In addition to planning special events from conceptualization to execution and managing the annual fund, I became a Blackbaud key user and redesigned donation web pages to match those of the main university website. I also served as social media manager, content creator, graphic designer, and grant writer.

GROUP SALES & EVENT ASSISTANT

DeGray Lake Resort State Park | 2006-2012

Arkansas State Parks is more than a team of coworkers. They are family. DeGray Lake Resort State Park was my first foray into the hands-on event management side of hospitality. Part administrative assistant, part sales manager, and part event manager, this role gave me the freedom to explore all aspects of hospitality event sales. I was also recruited by the park superintendent for multiple side projects including gathering statistics and creating presentations for the annual park report as well as the conceptualization, composition, and facilitation of a customer service training initiative for all staff.

CONCIERGE TEAM LEADER | PRESIDENT, RICHMOND AREA CONCIERGE ASSOCIATION

Allianz Global Assistance (formerly World Access) | 2002-2005

At World Access I rose swiftly from concierge associate to team leader. It was an amazing opportunity that formed the leadership style I still use today. Concierge services is a specialty offered by select financial institutions as well as insurance and travel companies. In a time when the internet was not yet what it is today, we did it all: travel arrangements, specialty gifts, concert ticket purchases, restaurant reservations, and specialty requests. From tracking down a Detroit Red Wings jersey in 24 hours for someone in Los Angeles to planning a surprise party at The Drake in Chicago or finding the best nanny for a client’s vacation in Fiji, I did it. World Access was also in a transitional phase that put me on the forefront beyond operations. I worked to revamp concierge training, created and presented presentations to recruit new corporate clients, worked on the design team for the Visa USA concierge website, and wrote the functional design document for a software upgrade from AS400 to PeopleSoft.
